Intent to Return - Family Guide
Welcome to Our Annual Intent to Return Process!
Each January, we ask all currently enrolled New School families to share their enrollment plans for the upcoming school year. This process helps us plan for classroom enrollment, staffing, and available spaces for new families joining our community.
All families are asked to complete the Intent to Return Form for each child enrolled, whether they will be continuing at New School, transitioning between programs, or not returning.
We understand that some families may still be exploring their options. This guide outlines the Intent to Return process, important deadlines, and next steps for each family's unique situation.
Please refer to our Intent to Return email communications for the specific dates and deadlines for the upcoming school year.
General Timeline
Early January — Intent to Return Process Opens
The Intent to Return Form is sent to all currently enrolled families.
End of January — Intent to Return Deadline
All families must submit their Intent to Return Form, regardless of their plans for the next school year.
Early February — Admission Agreements
Admission agreements are sent to returning families and must be completed within 14 days of being sent.
Mid-March — TK/Kindergarten Decisions
Extended decision deadline for preschool families considering TK or Kindergarten.
Mid-July — Afterschool Tuition Deposits
Deposit requests are sent 30 days before each child's scheduled start date, with payment due within 14 days.
Important: Specific dates and deadlines will be communicated through our annual Intent to Return emails. Please refer to these communications for the deadlines applicable to your family.
Missing a deadline: If any required form, agreement, decision, or payment is not received by its deadline, your child's space will no longer be held, and that space may be offered to another family. Late submissions will be considered based on remaining availability. Missing a deadline does not affect your child's current enrollment. Current enrollment and withdrawal requirements remain governed by your current admission agreement. If you anticipate difficulty meeting a deadline, please contact New School administration as soon as possible.
Find Your Enrollment Path
Every family's plans for the upcoming school year are a little different. Select the option below that best describes your child's situation to learn about the Intent to Return process specific to your family.
-
If your child will continue in New School's preschool program next year, please follow these steps to secure their enrollment.
Step 1: Submit Your Intent to Return
Complete the Intent to Return Form by the January deadline and indicate that your child will continue in preschool.
Step 2: Complete Your Admission Agreement
You will receive an admission agreement in February. Complete and return the agreement within 14 days of receiving it.
Step 3: Enrollment Secured
Once your completed admission agreement is received, your child's preschool space for the upcoming school year is secured.
Additional Information
Currently enrolled preschool children receive first priority for continued preschool enrollment.
There is no additional enrollment fee or tuition deposit for returning preschool students.
If you miss an enrollment deadline, your child's space will no longer be held and may be offered to another family. Late submissions are considered based on availability.
-
We understand that families considering Transitional Kindergarten (TK) or Kindergarten may need additional time to make their enrollment decisions, particularly while waiting for public school assignments. New School offers an extended decision period to help families navigate this transition.
Step 1: Submit Your Intent to Return
Complete the Intent to Return Form by the January deadline and indicate that you are considering TK/Kindergarten but have not yet made a final decision.
Step 2: Extended Decision Period
Your child's preschool space will be held until the extended decision deadline in mid-March, allowing your family time to explore public school options and consider BUSD assignments.
Step 3: Confirm Your Enrollment Plans
By the March deadline, notify New School of your decision:
Continuing in Preschool: You will receive a preschool admission agreement, which must be completed within 14 days to secure your child's space.
Transitioning to New School Afterschool: You may request afterschool enrollment. Placement is subject to availability and is not guaranteed. If a space is offered, you will receive an afterschool admission agreement, which must be completed within 14 days. A first-month tuition deposit will also be required during the summer.
Not Returning to New School: Let us know that your child will not be returning so their space can be offered to another family.
Additional Information
The extended decision period guarantees that your child's preschool space will be held through the March deadline, but it does not guarantee an afterschool space.
If you are considering New School's afterschool program, we encourage you to indicate this on your January Intent to Return Form so we can plan for your potential transition.
If the March decision deadline or subsequent admission agreement deadline is missed, your child's space will no longer be held and may be offered to another family. Late submissions will be considered based on remaining availability.
-
If your child will be transitioning from New School's preschool program to Transitional Kindergarten (TK) or Kindergarten, we would love to continue having them as part of our community through our afterschool program!
Current New School preschool students receive priority consideration for afterschool enrollment, though placement is subject to availability.
Step 1: Submit Your Intent to Return
Complete the Intent to Return Form by the January deadline and indicate that your child will be transitioning from preschool to afterschool. You will also be asked to provide your child's anticipated elementary school and preferred attendance schedule.
Step 2: Receive Your Afterschool Placement Confirmation
New School will review enrollment requests based on available spaces and our enrollment priorities.
If a space is available, you will receive an afterschool admission agreement, which must be completed within 14 days of receiving it. Once your completed admission agreement is received, your child's afterschool space will be reserved pending the summer tuition deposit.
Step 3: Submit Your Tuition Deposit
A deposit equal to the first month's tuition will be requested 30 days before your child's scheduled start date. Payment is due within 14 days of the request.
The deposit is nonrefundable, will be applied toward your child's first month of tuition, and fully secures their afterschool enrollment.
Additional Information
Current afterschool students continuing in the program receive first priority, followed by current preschool students transitioning into afterschool.
Afterschool placement is not guaranteed and depends on available space.
There is no additional enrollment fee for students transitioning from New School preschool.
If an enrollment deadline is missed, your child's space will no longer be held and may be offered to another family. Late submissions will be considered based on remaining availability.
-
If your child will continue in New School's afterschool program next year, please follow these steps to reserve and secure their enrollment.
Step 1: Submit Your Intent to Return
Complete the Intent to Return Form by the January deadline and indicate that your child will continue in afterschool.
Step 2: Complete Your Admission Agreement

The deposit is nonrefundable, will be applied toward your child's first month of tuition, and fully secures their afterschool enrollment.
Additional Information
Currently enrolled afterschool students receive first priority for continued afterschool enrollment.
There is no additional enrollment fee for returning students.
Considering BUSD LEARNS or another afterschool program? You may still reserve your child's space at New School by completing the admission agreement, even if you have not made a final decision. The same summer tuition deposit requirements apply.

If your child will not be returning to New School for the upcoming school year, please let us know by completing the Intent to Return Form. Your response helps us plan enrollment and offer available spaces to new families.

Step 2: Confirm Your Child's Departure

If your child will be leaving before the end of their current enrollment period, please communicate their anticipated last day of attendance to New School administration.
Additional Information
All families are asked to submit an Intent to Return Form, even if their child will not be returning.
Families withdrawing from their current enrollment remain subject to the 30-day withdrawal notice and tuition policies outlined in their existing admission agreement.
If your family's plans change and you later wish to return, enrollment will depend on available spaces at that time.
